News, Views, and Reviews from the Film World
As professional colleagues Leonard Courtright and Doug Harris discovered their shared interests, passions, and peeves, a friendship was borne which finds its perfection expression in adventurous conversations. These exchanges, which occasionally take place in exotic locales and are principally triggered pop culture and topical events (and fueled by fine food and wine) are now presented for public consumption with The Smart Guyz podcast.
A lifelong movie fan, serial entrepreneur Leonard Courtright was introduced by Doug Harris to the Houston Film Critics and formal film critique as an underwriter and occasional contributor to the organization’s Critics Circle broadcasts on Radio Brave. Now an honorary member of the HFCS, he
collaborates with Harris to produce The Smart Guyz podcast, which takes its name from Leonard’s signature SMART scoring system. The acronym, which stands for Story-Music-Acting-Run Time-Technology, is used to summarize in abbreviated form Leonard’s opinion on the appeal of, and his
affection for, movies of all genres. An enthusiastic fan of classic movies and all things Disney, Leonard serves as the HFCS’ Marketing, Development and Underwriting Liaison. The HFCS’ Headquarters includes a display of Leonard’s movie and celebrity memorabilia. Among his most unusual acquisitions is a set of Jerry Lewis’ personal golf clubs in a monogramed bag.
DOUG HARRIS/JR. MINTZ
For over thirty-five years, America’s movie lovers have enjoyed the unabashed, on air antics of movie critic Jr. Mintz, the creation of Doug Harris. His Houston radio affiliates have included Rock 101 KLOL, The Buzz, The New 93Q, and News 92 FM. Harris/Mintz was a regular on the Dean and Rog Show for seven years and also enjoyed an eight year syndication run with the Connecticut Radio Network, heard daily on eight New England stations. Fans know he’s tired of Kevin Hart, wishes Johnny Depp would find his way, thinks Denzel Washington can do no wrong, doesn’t miss Adam Sandler, thinks Tilda Swinton is underappreciated, that Channing Tatum is overrated and he has forgiven Clint Eastwood for co-starring with an orangutan--twice. As Jr. Mintz, Doug Harris writes and voices film reviews and entertainment news stories for NASA’s Third Rock Radio and for Made in Texas Radio, in addition to interviews and special features. As Doug Harris, he co-hosts The Smart Guyz film-focused podcasts with friend and fellow HFCS member Leonard Courtright. A member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and a Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee, Harris currently serves as President of the Houston Film Critics Society.
